HOW TO SPOT QUALITY BOXING GLOVES: 6 THINGS TO CHECK

Not all boxing gloves are made the same. From the materials and stitching to the wrist support and fit, several details can help you assess whether a pair is right for your training.

At The Ring Pro Shop in Bali, we stock boxing gloves from brands including Twins Special, Fairtex, Rival, Fly, Cleto Reyes, Winning and more. Here are six things to check before you buy.

1. MATERIALS AND OVERALL CONSTRUCTION

Start by looking at the materials and how the glove is put together.

Leather and synthetic materials can both be used in boxing gloves. The material alone doesn’t determine quality: construction, intended use and maintenance also matter.

Check the exterior for:

  • Even stitching and neatly finished seams.

  • Consistent construction around the palm and thumb.

  • No obvious loose threads, tears or defects.

  • A finish that feels appropriate for the model.

A premium price doesn’t automatically guarantee a better fit for you. Inspect the actual glove and consider how it suits your training.

2. STITCHING AND SEAMS

Stitching is an important detail to inspect because gloves experience repeated movement and impact during training.

Look closely at the seams around the fingers, thumb, palm and wrist. They should appear secure and reasonably even, without visible gaps or loose stitching.

If you’re buying in person, inspect both gloves rather than checking only one. If ordering online, choose a reputable seller and review the product details carefully.

3. PADDING AND SHAPE

Padding plays an important role in how a glove feels and how it is intended to be used.

Check whether the padding appears evenly distributed and whether the glove retains its intended shape. Avoid gloves with obvious lumps, flattened areas or signs of damage.

Different gloves are designed for different activities, including bag work, pad work and sparring. The right choice depends on the intended use and your gym’s requirements.

Remember that appearance alone cannot tell you how a glove will perform. Choose an appropriate model from a reputable brand and seek guidance if you’re unsure.

4. WRIST SUPPORT AND FASTENING

A glove should feel secure around your wrist without creating uncomfortable pressure or restricting comfortable movement.

There are two common fastening styles:

Velcro: Convenient to put on and remove, particularly when training alone.

Lace-up: Uses laces to secure the glove and may require assistance to tie properly.

Neither style is automatically better for everyone. Consider your routine, fit preferences and training requirements.

When trying gloves on, wear your usual hand wraps. Fasten the gloves properly and check that they feel stable and comfortable.

5. FIT, COMFORT AND THUMB POSITION

One of the most important quality checks is how the gloves fit your hands. A good fit should feel secure without excessive pressure on your knuckles, fingers or thumb. Your hands should not slide around inside the gloves, and the thumb should sit comfortably in its intended position.

Before choosing a pair, check:

  • Whether your fingers fit comfortably.

  • Whether the gloves accommodate your hand wraps.

  • Whether the thumb feels naturally positioned.

  • Whether the wrist fastening feels secure.

  • Whether you can make a comfortable fist.

Glove weight, measured in ounces, does not tell you everything about the size of the hand compartment. Try gloves on where possible and ask your coach which weight is appropriate for your training.

6. BRAND, INTENDED USE AND PRICE

A recognised brand can help you research a glove’s intended use, available models and product specifications. However, brand reputation and price should not replace checking fit, construction and suitability.

At The Ring Pro Shop, you can explore options across different price ranges.

BONUS: HOW TO MAKE YOUR BOXING GLOVES LAST LONGER

Even well-made gloves need proper care.

  • Air them out after every training session.

  • Use clean hand wraps and wash them regularly.

  • Wipe the exterior according to the manufacturer’s care instructions.

  • Allow the gloves to dry completely before storing them.

  • Avoid leaving them in a hot car or a closed, damp gym bag.

  • Check regularly for damaged stitching, worn padding and loose fastenings.

Good maintenance helps you keep your equipment in better condition, but replace gloves when they are damaged or no longer suitable for safe training.
