Starting boxing can feel overwhelming. Walk into a boxing shop and you’ll find gloves, wraps, shoes, head-guards, mouth-guards and plenty of other equipment.
So what do you actually need?
The good news is that you don’t need everything on day one. Here’s a simple guide to getting started.
🥊 1. BOXING GLOVES
Your first pair of boxing gloves is the most important purchase.
For beginners, look for a comfortable, versatile training glove that suits your training and fits properly.
At The Ring Shop, you can choose from brands including Twins, Fairtex, Rival, Cleto Reyes, Fly, No Boxing No Life and Winning, with options for different experience levels and budgets.
Not sure about the right glove weight?
Ask your coach first.
🩹 2. HAND WRAPS
Hand wraps are an essential part of your boxing setup.
They go underneath your gloves and help secure your hands and wrists during training.
If you’re new to boxing, ask a coach to show you how to wrap your hands correctly before your first serious training session.
At The Ring Shop, you can find hand wraps from The Ring, SVRG, Rival, Fly and Winning.
👟3. BOXING SHOES
You don’t necessarily need boxing shoes for your first class. However, once you train regularly, boxing shoes can help you feel more comfortable with footwork and movement around the ring.
The Ring Shop offers boxing shoes from Nike, Winning and Kangrui.
🦷4. MOUTHGUARD
Starting sparring?
A mouthguard becomes an important piece of protective equipment for contact training.
Choose one appropriate for your training level and check with your coach if you’re unsure.
The Ring Shop carries Fairtex and Winning mouthguards.
🥊 5. HEADGUARD
Headguards are generally something you’ll consider once you move into contact training and sparring.
Different styles provide different levels of coverage, including cheek protection, face-saver designs and nose-bar designs.
Don’t choose one simply because it has the most coverage.
Fit, comfort, visibility and your coach’s requirements all matter.
🛡️6. GROIN GUARD
A groin guard is another piece of protective equipment used for contact training and sparring.
The Ring Shop offers options from Fairtex, Cleto Reyes and Winning.
If you’re unsure which style or size is right for you, ask your coach or the shop team for guidance.
🎽 7. TRAINING CLOTHES
You don’t need expensive boxing clothes to start.
A comfortable T-shirt or tank top and training shorts are enough.
As you train more regularly, you can upgrade to dedicated boxing apparel from The Ring, Boxraw and Sixbox.
🎒 8. GYM BAG
Once you start collecting gloves, wraps, shoes, clothes and protective equipment, you’ll quickly realise you need somewhere to put it all.
A good gym bag keeps your equipment organised and ready for training.
The Ring Shop carries the Fairtex BAG2 Gym Bag in several colours.
